Things I've learned this week...#1

  • To not walk past the front desk at the conservatorio without speaking to a receptionist first. She will not like it and will proceed to tell you off in Italian. I don’t know what she said, but I know it wasn’t a happy thing.
  • I think I have finally got the hang of opening my front door. Sounds silly but my key is a little bugger and it’s taken me nearly three weeks to open my door on the first attempt consistently, even if this does mean putting it in, wiggling it around a bit and twisting a good few times before finally getting it right. (That’ll test how dirty your mind is.)
  • To not worry so much about learning the language. Obviously I am learning as much as I can, but it’s easy to forget that it is not the main reason I’m here!
  • Further to that point, learning a new language is hard.
  • If someone in Italy says something will be done in a day, add on about 3 more days and then it might be done. Or maybe never.
  • Joining a choir was a really good idea. I’ve met lots of lovely people, sang notes I didn’t know I could sing (well, screech) and it’s given me something to do seeing as I apparently don’t start at the conservatorio until December. (?!)

And the last two are less Italy related and more life related:
  • I’m not sure what lesson I’ve learned here because I’m not entirely sure it was my fault, but if you feel something in your shoe (whilst not wearing socks) don’t assume it is gravel. Consider that there might be a shard of glass stuck in your toe.
  • If you’re unsure whether a door will open automatically or you have to push it, don’t try pushing it at the side that it could open automatically on. Turns out, the door won’t care if your fingers are there and it will automatically open, trap your fingers and bruise them. Who knew? Oh yeah, everyone except me...
