My English home comforts and their Italian replacements

Netflix vs. Skype

With unlimited internet in England and a summer of only working a few nights a week, my time was often spent browsing Netflix and having cups of tea. You could say I was living the dream. But in Italy, I am paying for a certain amount of internet, and have a counter so I can see how much I am using, which can be irritating but is useful. Although I can no longer endlessly have Gilmore Girls on the background (cry), I can plan Skypes with people from home and actually value the time talking and catching up. It does use up a fair bit of internet, but at least it’s ‘real life’, rather than a series or film.

Tea vs. Hot chocolate

No, Italy is not backwards, it does obviously sell tea. I usually just have green tea but if I really fancy some ‘normal’ tea it is possible. This isn’t too common in cafes though, and when it comes to coffee I actually prefer instant coffee rather than the real stuff, so when ordering in a cafe I have recently opted for hot chocolate instead. And oh my, once you’ve had it there is no going back. Essentially, melted chocolate. In a cup. With cream. And just like that, my cravings for a cup of Yorkshire tea are gone…

Spotify vs. Live music

As I mentioned, my limit on internet means I cannot search for and listen to new artists 24/7 anymore, and instead have found old bought albums on my laptop (rekindled my love for Everything Everything) and been more eager to seek out live music instead. Be it the jazz night at Bottega del Vino, the live music nights at Trottamundo, the choir I have joined at the University for Foreigners, or just me practising away in the little room down the street that has a piano. I’m looking forward to actually starting at the Conservatorio (yes, you’re reading this right, it’s the middle of November and I haven’t started yet) so I can get more involved in the musical happenings of Perugia. Cause, you know, that’s kind of why I’m here.

Sea vs. Land

In England, my two homes are the seaside town of Whitby and the city of Newcastle, both situated on the north east coast. Therefore I always feel close to the sea. I definitely take it for granted, because now I’m in Perugia - pretty much in the centre of Italy - I’m starting to crave the sea air and beach walks. Yet it is quite difficult to complain about when as I have the most gorgeous view out of my bedroom window that looks over the edge of Perugia and further out into Umbria. I can even see Assissi (when the weather is nice)! So as much as I’m missing the beach, I know that I’ll be returning to it soon and this view is really not a bad replacement in the meantime.

One of my favourite places to be at home

And finally,
A nice hot bubble bath with candles, vs. ....
Hmm, I think I'm gonna have to wait until I get home for this one unfortunately.
