On the 4th day of being in Italy, I was invited with my flatmate and his Erasmus friends to visit Terni, a small city south of Perugia.
Wikipedia tells me that 'it advertises itself as a 'City of Lovers'' as it is the place Saint Valentine was born and became a bishop. I've got to say, it didn't exactly ooze romance to me, but I did only see the train station and a kebab shop so I'm maybe not the best to judge...
The main reason for our visit was to see the Cascata delle Marmore, a short bus ride away from Terni, and the tallest man-made waterfall in Europe. Tickets were only 5 euros, and a map showed a choice of a few different walking routes around the waterfall. I don't think we anticipated to do the longest one, but I'm glad we did! Here is a photo from one of the first viewpoints...
And here is one from the top, feat. pole (fab photography skills).
Ah look at that rainbow.
What they don't tell you in the leaflet, is how WET it is. (I realise that may sound silly, but when you see it from afar you expect to just stroll round and admire its beauty and take photos whilst your hair stays in place and your glasses don't steam up...) And muddy. The woman we saw in her office suit and blue high heels clearly didn't know that either.
All in all a lovely day and nice to meet so many Erasmus people too. Definitely worth a visit!
Highlights:
- lovely views!
- I counted the walk as my exercise for the week.
Lowlights:
- the horrible air-raid style siren they blast out when they're going to 'start' the waterfall. Had 2 war nightmares since.
- wearing sandals. No one told me we were going on a hike?!
